Olive oil is fantastic stuff. You could make a mixed blend using three parts olive oil to two parts lemon juice to waterproof your wooden worm bins. I know lemons arenât something to feed your worms, but that doesnât mean you canât use them on the exterior. You can use a spray bottle, but I think it works well if you dip a rag into the solution and rub it into the wood. Work the olive oil into the wood grain by rubbing it back and forth. When the wood absorbs the oil solution, leave it to rest for about ten minutes and then wipe any excess oil off using a fresh, clean cloth.
Olive oil is an excellent natural option for sealing your worm bins, as well as adding an extra layer of protection. If you notice the wood starting to look a bit dull, itâs likely time to add another layer of oil to the wood. If you do it right, the coating should last a while. All youâll have to do is touch it up from time to time.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil isnât used so much as a water-repellant, although it does add some benefits in that department. Instead, coconut oil can be used as a high-quality conditioner for wood. This oil is known for keeping wood supple and protecting it from warping. You could use the liquid version or the solid. I find the solid has more oomph behind it.
All you have to do is mix the oil well to start with. Take a cloth with some oil on it and rub it into the wood bins. Once youâve covered the surface, give it about 2 or 3 minutes before taking a clean, dry cloth to wipe it clean. Coconut oil can be applied seasonally to help prevent elemental damage from each season.
